Wind maps

Wind (observation)

Wind (observation)

These maps show wind speed measurements of weather stations all over the world for the indicated time. The colour scale is the same used for the maps of wind speed . Combining these maps with line plots gives you additional information: For instance, adding streamlines will show you modeled wind directions in addition to the actual wind speeds. More: see wind

Wind speed

Wind speed

These maps show the wind as average wind speed, with colours shown in the legend. In addition to the wind speed in a specific altitude, wind direction may be shown with streamlines, for instance, as well as the sea level pressure with isobars and others. More: see wind .

Wind (low speeds)

Wind (low speeds)

These maps show the average low wind speeds, with the colours shown in the legend. Combining these maps with line plots such as streamlines will give you more wind information. More: see wind .

Wind gust

Wind gust

The gusts map usually show the speed of wind gusts at 10 m above ground, with the colours shown in the legend. Further, the direction of the gusts may be shown with streamlines or arrows by adding line plots. More: see wind .

Wind (detail)

Wind (detail)

These maps show the wind speed with colours as shown in the legend. Further, contour lines between colours are marked with numbers that indicate the wind speed. Wind direction is visualised with arrows. More: see wind .

250hPa Wind (Jet stream)

250 hPa Wind (Jet stream)

These maps show the wind speed in the height of the 250 hPa pressure level. Wind speed is indicated with colours, whereas the wind direction is shown with streamlines. More: see wind .

The 250 hPa pressure level is the altitude of jet streams. Jet streams are strong and generally westerly winds in the upper troposphere. They are narrow and meandering currents with wind speeds up to 400km/h. There are mainly two different kinds of jet streams in the atmosphere, each of them occur on the northern and southern hemisphere: The polar jet stream and the subtropical jet stream.
