API Pricing

The standard pricing of the meteoblue weather API depends on the number of desired meteoblue credits, which can be used to retrieve data, images, datasets or maps. We offer prepaid meteoblue credits and customers can use them to access several different products. With this flexible pricing, it is possible to easily add new products, remove products or change the number of API calls during the contract year.

The actual cost for the meteoblue weather API is defined by three elements:

  1. Yearly access fee (more information see below)
  2. Data cost depending on prepaid meteoblue credits. Each API call deducts a certain amount of credits depending on the forecast data package, history API call, image or map.
  3. Discount options

We also offer high-volume discounts and various discount options for implementing the meteoblue logo with link to www.meteoblue.com into your website or app, for long-term cooperation and other arrangements.

Other price models like capacity reservation (daily limit flat rate), location-based pricing (price per location for a defined set of products), use-based pricing (price depends on number of API calls) or revenue sharing can be offered on request.

Data Cost: API Calls, Map Tiles & meteoblue Credits

The data cost is calculated based on meteoblue credits. API calls for data packages, images, map tiles or datasets can be transformed to credits:

  • Forecast data packages or Image API calls are accounted with 2'000, 4'000, 8'000 or 16'000 meteoblue credits depending on the amount of raw data that needs to be processed for delivery and complexity of the included weather variables.
  • For each map tile, 200 meteoblue credits are accounted.
  • For history requests, each datapoint — representing one timestep for each variable — is valued at ten meteoblue credits. The total credits required depends on the time range selected, ensuring that you only pay for the data you request.

There are some credits already included in the yearly access fee, additional credits can be purchased for 200 € per 200 million meteoblue credits with high-volume discounts:

Price meteoblue credits (million)
200 € 200
400 € 500
800 € 1'200
1'200 € 2'500
1'600 € 3'600
2'400 € 6'000

Packages and Image API

The pricing for our Packages and Image API is based on meteoblue credits. The number of credits per API call is calculated based on the data package or image used with your API key.

Multiple packages can be combined within one call but are still counted separately. Simple API calls require fewer meteoblue credits than complex API calls with more specialised weather variables.

Use case Example price calculation
Forecast packages:

basic-1h (8'000 credits) and basic-day (4'000 credits)

10 locations with 2 daily API calls = 20 API calls/day

20 API calls x 365 days x 12'000 credits = 87,6 million credits / year

Access Bronze = 400 € / year (includes 100 million credits)

Total price = 400 € / year

Forecast packages:

basic-1h (8'000 credits) and solar-1h (16'000 credits)

10 locations with 5 daily API calls = 50 API calls/day

50 API calls x 365 days x 24'000 credits = 438 million credits / year

Access Bronze = 400 € / year (includes 100 million credits)

+ 500 million credits = 400 €

Total price = 800 € / year

Images:

Meteogram Agro (16'000 credits) displayed on a website on average 1'500 times a day

1'500 API calls x 365 days x 16'000 credits = 8'760 million credits / year

Access Bronze = 400 € / year (includes 100 million credits)

+ 8'660 million credits = 4'000 €

Total price = 4'400 € / year

The packages and images are classified in 4 credit categories. While the credits deducted for xmin and 3h packages are equal to hourly ones, daily packages cost only half the credits.

Maps API

The pricing for our Maps API is based on tiles, whereas they are transferred to meteoblue credits used with your API key. As each tile is defined by pixels (512x512), the number of tiles used for displaying a map depends on the size and resolution of the screen and zooming level. Displaying a map on a mobile device requires much less tiles, than on a big full HD flatscreen. Furthermore, each map layer consists of several map tiles. The combination of different map overlays (e.g. Radar & Satellite, Wind animation, temperature map) requires more map tiles.

To access our Maps API, at least the access level "Access Silver" is required, which includes 200 Mio. meteoblue credits (= 1 Mio. map tiles). This corresponds to 2739 map tiles per day for one year. Additional credits for more map tiles can be purchased with high volume discounts.

For the calculations in the table below, we used empirical values of meteoblue website users:

  • Average map tiles per map view: 10 (between 2-480 tiles per map view)
  • Average map tiles per map visit: 100 (between 20-10'000 tiles per map view)

A map view is defined as the display of a whole map consisting of several map tiles by any end user.

A map visit is counted whenever one user accesses our weather maps. They can view several maps and apply zoom levels during their visit.

For specialized use cases like meteorological analysis and comparisons (e.g. flight planning, resource scheduling), much more maps are consulted and an average of 1'000 tiles per visit can be expected.

Our radar, satellite and wind animations are based on proprietary algorithms and can only be accessed with the maps plugin (no customization based on the tile API available). When clicking on the “play” button, a seamless animation of tiles for each minute is calculated in the browser of the end user. Thus, the tiles required to display the animation are only the ones from the original resolution even though some more surrounding tiles are required (max. up to twice as much).

Use case Example price calculation
Maps:

A website or app with 8'000 daily users of which 1% use weather maps would result in 80 daily map visits.

Each map visit is deemed to be rather simple with about 100 tiles per visit.

80 visits x 100 tiles x 365 days = 2,92 million map tiles

2,92 Mio. map tiles x 200 credits = 584 million credits / year

Access Silver = 1'200 € / year (includes 200 million credits)

+ 500 million credits = 400 €

Total price = 1'600 € / year

Maps:

A website or app with 1'000 daily users of which 5% use weather maps would result in 50 daily map visits.

The map visits are complex (e.g. preparation of paragliding flights) with about 1'000 tiles per visit.

50 visits x 1'000 tiles x 365 days = 18.25 million map tiles

18.25 Mio. map tiles x 200 = 3'650 million credits / year

Access Silver = 1'200 € / year (includes 200 million credits)

+ 3'600 million. credits = 1'600 €

Total price = 2'800 € / year

Animation:

A website or app with 2'000 daily users of which 10% use animation would result in 200 daily animation visits. Each animation is displayed for the last 3 hours, based on 15 minutes resolution (12 timesteps).

Clicking through these timesteps (12 x 10 tiles = 120 tiles) requires 120 tiles, while for the animation up to 240 are needed:

240 tiles x 200 visits: 48'000 tiles per day

48'000 tiles x 365 days = 17.52 million map tiles

17.52 Mio. map tiles x 200 = 3'504 million credits / year

Access Silver = 1'200 € / year (includes 200 million credits)

+ 3'304 million. credits = 1'600 €

Total price = 2'800 € / year

Dataset API

The pricing for our Dataset API is based on datapoints used with your API key, while each datapoint is accounted with 10 meteoblue credits. As each datapoint is defined by timestep of each variable, the number of meteoblue credits used for a specific request depends on the number of variables, the length of the desired time period and the original time resolution of the data source.

To access our Dataset API the minimum access level is Access Gold, which includes 500 Mio. meteoblue credits. This, for example, allows customers to retrieve 30 years of hourly data for 5 variables and 10 locations, from 4 different models.

The datapoints required for a specific request can be assessed with the Dataset configurator interface. More meteoblue credits for larger request are available with high-volume discounts.

Use case Example price calculation
Time series:

Hourly values, 100 locations, 10 variables for 30 years (1991-2020)

100 x 10 x 30 x 365 days x 24 hours x 10 credits = 2'628 million credits

Access Gold = 2'400 € / year (includes 500 million credits)

+ 2'500 million credits = 1'200 €

Total price = 3'600 € / year

Risk analysis:

Flood risk for single location based on ERA5 data (30km) for the last 40 years:

Hourly values, 1 variable for 40 years (1981-2020) repeated for 1'000 locations throughout the year

1'000 x 1 x 40 x 365 days x 24 hours x 10 credits = 3'504 million credits

Access Gold = 2'400 € / year (includes 500 million credits)

+ 3'600 million credits = 1'600 €

Total price = 4'000 € / year
