meteoblue models

meteoblue weather models simulate physical processes. A weather model divides the world or a region into small grid cells. Each cell is about 4 km to 40 km wide and 100 m to 2 km high. Our models contain 60 vertical atmospheric layers and reach deep into the stratosphere up to 60 km, which corresponds to pressure of 10-25 hPa. The weather is simulated by solving complex mathematical equations between all grid cells every few seconds. The computed values of weather variables, such as temperature, wind speed or cloudiness are stored every hour.

meteoblue operates a large number of its own proprietary weather models and, additionally, integrates open data from various sources into its the weather data base. All meteoblue models are run twice a day on a dedicated High Performance Cluster.

Model resolution at each location

You can check the model resolution at each location simply on our website. Search the location (note: you can also enter coordinates in the location search box), and see the radius in the rainSPOT. The radius displayed (in kilometres) allows to determine the respective model resolution for the selected location in the following way:

rainSPOT Domain (resolution) Notes (time resolution)
15 km radius NMM4 / NEMS4 (4 km) Europe - from Scotland to Portugal and Crete. rainSPOT aggregates 2 grid cells to improve the overview (1 h time interval)
35 km radius NMM12 / NEMS12 (12 km) Europe - from Iceland to Morocco and Jordan (1 h)
55 km radius AF01 / SA01 / AS01 (18 km) Subsahara-Africa (1 h)
90 km radius NEMSGLOBAL (30 km) Global - each point on Earth (1 h)
60 km radius GFS05 (25 / 50 km) Global - 25 km for Temperature, Precipitation and Wind, 50 km for further variables (3 h, 1 h interpolation)
30 km radius NEMSSA (10 km) South America (1 h)
25 km radius NEMSAS02 (8 km) East Asia - including Japan, Taiwan, parts of China and Mongolia and others (1 h)
35 km radius NEMSIN (12 km) Indian Subcontinent - with India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and others (1 h)
25 km radius NEMSNZ (8 km) New Zealand (1 h)

Other resolutions can be used in different domains. Check the rainSPOT for confirmation.
The domain and the last update time of the model forecast are indicated on the main page under the rainSPOT (above the register "More / show hourly details").
